Poker Chip Reviews

Chipco The Egyptians

Overall Score 9.6

Chip Weight Appearance Feel Sound Quality Price

I've never been a big fan of ceramic chips.  But for these chips I'll make an exception.  These poker chips are simply gorgeous!  The colors are vibrant, and consistent throughout the set.  The edges are slightly rounded making them a pleasure to shuffle and do chip tricks with.  The surface of these chips have that classic Chipco feel, almost like primer that's been wet sanded.  These poker chips are a real pleasure to hold and stack.  And at 10 grams they have some real heft to them.

The standouts in this set are the octagon shaped chip and the large plaque.  The plaque is just huge and measures 3 1/2" by 2".  This is the only home poker chip set that I know of that offers plaques.  Plaques are normally reserved for high stakes games in casinos outside the US.  The plaque itself is a real treat to use in home tournaments.  It's quite heavy and unlike the other chips, has a smooth glossy feel to it.  Chipco has announced that it will no longer manufacture plaques for home games, so if you're interested in owning some plaques, now is the time buy them.

The octagon shaped chip measures 44mm and is also unique for home poker chip sets.  Having a pile of these stacked high in front of you near the end of a home poker tournament is a real treat.  Add a couple plaques into the mix and you'll feel like a high roller.

Prices range from $.95 to $1.05 per chip, the plaque costing around $6-$7 last time I checked.  (Update 11/09/05 The plaques are no longer available from retailers.  The going rate is currently $15-$16 per plaque).  Even if you don't plan on using these in your home game, you might want to consider purchasing one of these sets simply for collector's value as the plaques will not be around for long.  This is one of the nicest home poker chip sets that I've ever seen.
