After reviewing my new set of Nevada Jacks Skulls I have to admit that my feelings are mixed.  When I first ordered the set my expectations were sky high as I'd been told that the Nevada Jacks Skulls are some of the nicest composite grade chips you can buy.  Some of my poker buddies prefer them to Chipcos.

When my set of 300 Nevada Jacks Skulls first arrived I felt somewhat disappointed.  Having just reviewed Chipco's Egyptians, I couldn't help but compare the two sets.  The graphics on the Nevada Jacks aren't nearly as crisp and clear as on Chipcos.  The art looks more like what you'd see on a silk screened tee shirt, somewhat blurry with a textured surface.

The texture on the Nevada Jacks is slightly rougher than that on Chipco's.  The problem is that the chips feel almost plasticy.  Whereas Chipco's Egyptians have a substantive, weighty, cool almost ceramic feel, the Nevada Jacks Skulls just feel like expensive plastic chips.  There really is a tremendous difference in my mind.

The sound they make when splashing the pot is not nearly as satisfying as that of Chipcos.  They make more of a plastic-like sound which is worlds apart from the sound my Paulsons make.  When being shuffled the sound they make is akin to scrapping ones nails across a chalkboard which can be shiver inducing when more than one person is shuffling them during a home poker game.

Having said all that, I must admit the chips have grown on me and I am considering purchasing another 300.  I like the artwork and colors of the chips.  They stack nicely and are easy to push across the table when stacked high.  I think these chips are ideal for the more rowdy home poker games where chips get thrown, splattered with food and beer, and are generally mistreated.  The type of game I wouldn't let my Paulsons anywhere near!  I don't feel nearly as squeamish when I see someone grab a stack of chips with sticky fingers covered in hot wing sauce or drop one in their beer to see if it will float (yes my moronic friend actually did that).

They are also cheaper than Chipcos costing roughly $199 for a set of 300.  You can find some really good deals on Ebay right now as Nevada Jacks had a promotion going on for awhile where you could purchase a set fairly cheaply.

Overall I'd say that the Nevada Jacks Skulls are great for people who want poker chips that are a step up from the basic plastic chips that everyone uses, but don't want to spend big bucks on quality clay set.
