Recommended Poker BooksThe following poker books are what I'd consider to be some of very best books on poker playing strategies written to date. This list is by no means complete and does not include every book I've read on poker (I've read some real stinkers). Rather than overload you with too many choices, the following list of poker books is basically what I'd recommend to someone just getting their feet wet with online hold'em who intends to become serious about winning at poker. I've read and re-read every one of these poker books and enthusiastically recommend any and all of them to hold'em players that are determined to improve their game. If you've never read a book on poker and are new to Texas Hold'em, then this is probably the first book you should read. It explains basic play very well and is simple to read and understand. This is a great book for poker newbs. If you're already a good poker player and want to get better, then I'd skip this one and start with the books below. Best Price $12.00
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky This is the very first book on poker I ever read. It
will revolutionize your game. It discusses everything from pot odds to
how to bluff correctly. The only thing I don't like about this book is
that many of the examples are applied to less popular variations of poker
such as razz, lowball draw, etc... Many pros will tell you that this
is the book that helped get them to where they are today.
Best Price $17.89 Small Stakes Hold 'em This is the bible for online low limit poker. This is required reading for low limit players. I've read and re-read my copy so many times that the cover has fallen off. My only criticism would be that their starting hand chart is a bit aggressive for online play at low limits, but otherwise this is a must read book. It has everything from how to calculate pot odds and count your outs, to how to correctly evaluate different types of flops. The large quiz section at the end of the book is especially helpful and will improve your play. If you only read two books on poker, this should be the second book you read. Best Price $12.98
This book is perfect if you play at some of the tighter mid/high limit games online or live. It won't help much if you play $.50/1.00 at Party Poker, but this is a must read book if you play against fairly knowledgeable players. It's written by Sklansky so read it! Best Price $14.96
This book actually took me by surprise as I didn't expect much from it when I first purchased it. First of all this is a dense book. Reading it will give you a headache. If there were poker theory classes in college, this is the type of book I'd expect them to pass out in class. This is pure poker strategy without any fluff. If you want funny stories about bad beats or uplifting "you can do it" type garbage, then go buy Killer Poker (a joke of a book). If you want a mini textbook on correct low limit poker strategy, then this book is for you. It's jam packed with examples and covers everything you need to know to play limit hold'em profitably online. Reading this book alone would put many losing players back into the black. I've read this book cover to cover several times. I highly recommend it.
Diary Of A Mad Poker
Player An entertaining account of one man's journey in the footsteps of Chris Moneymaker. Richard Sparks travels from the virtual tables at Party Poker all the way to the World Series Of Poker. This book comes highly recommended by such legends as Dan Harrington, Tom McEvoy, Mike Caro, and of course Poker Jesus.
