How To Qualify For The WSOP

Unlike in other "World Series" competitions, you don't have to literally qualify for the WSOP with points, rankings, or through qualification events.  You don't have to be a poker pro, or even a very good player to sign up.  You can simply raid your bank account for $10,000 and buy your seat at the WSOP.  This is how the 2005 WSOP winner Joseph Hachem entered the event.  You can read about it on our WSOP News page.

But if your bank account looks anything like mine, and you have a less than understanding wife when it comes to your poker addiction, then we're going to have to find an alternate route to the WSOP.  That's where online WSOP tournaments come in.  Direct WSOP satellites range in price from $100 to $1000, the latter price guaranteeing you a seat at a single table tournament.  Depending on how many players enter, a certain amount of seats to the WSOP will be given away.  These usually include some sort of travel package (room, airfare, spending cash, etc...).  Occasionally sites will offer freerolls for a WSOP seat that you can qualify for by meeting promotional criteria specific to that poker room.

If $100 is a bit steep for you, then you have the option of entering "pre" WSOP satellites which provide entrance to direct WSOP satellites as prizes.  These usually range in price from $1 to $40.  The higher the price the greater your chances of winning a WSOP seat.  The really cheap satellites are usually a series of "steps" whereas the winners proceed to the next "step" with the final tournament being the direct WSOP satellite.

My advice would be to enter the $100-$150 tournaments.  Although Chris Moneymaker won his seat by winning a $40 pre-satellite and then winning the direct satellite, that's a bit of a long shot.  If I was serious about entering the WSOP, I'd set aside a decent amount of cash from my bankroll and enter several direct WSOP satellites.  Your chances are much better and it'll take the pressure off if you know that you have x amount of buyins available should your current WSOP attempt fail.  Frankly, unless you have money flowing out of your ears, no one should ever have to pay the full $10,000 for a WSOP seat.  If you can't qualify for a WSOP seat through satellites with less than half that amount, then you probably don't belong there anyway.

Just about every major poker room offers WSOP satellites.  As it gets closer to the next WSOP, poker sites will start promoting the tournaments more heavily.   You shouldn't have to shop around too much to find a good deal.  Check out our online poker room reviews page to find a good poker room to qualify for the WSOP through.  Most poker rooms on our reviews page offer a decent chance to win a WSOP seat.
