WSOP 2006

Harrah's Entertainment has announced that the 2006 WSOP will again be held at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  Preliminary events will start on June 25, 2006 with the main event beginning on July 28, 2006.  This years attendance promises to dwarf even last years.  Start hitting those WSOP satellites!

WSOP 2005

After a grueling 15 hours on the final day of the WSOP, Joseph Hachem defeated 5,618 other players to become the first Australian WSOP Champion.   It was nearly 6am when Hachem was dealt 7c, 3s on a board of 4d, 5d, 6h while facing American Steven Dannenmann.  Dannenmann held Ad, 3c.  Hachem checked and Dannenmann bet $700,000.  Hachem raised him to  $1,700,000.  On the turn an As was dealt giving Dannenmann top pair versus Hachem’s straight.  Hachem bet $2,000,000 and Dannenmann responded with a $5,000,000 raise.  Hachem went all in, and Dannenmann followed suit.  Dannenmann needed a 7 on the river to survive.  Fortunately for Hachem the river was a 4c handing him the largest prize in WSOP history, a whopping $7,500,000!

Hachem, a native of Lebanon moved to Australia in the early 70’s.  After being stricken with a rare blood disorder, Hachem decided to take a break from his job as a chiropractor and pursued his interest in poker.  Unlike two of the previous WSOP winners Greg Fossilman Raymer and Chris Moneymaker, Hachem bought his entry into the WSOP for a cool $10,000.

After the final hand, cries of "Aussie, Aussie, Oi!, Oi!, Oi!" could be heard throughout the tournament room.  Hachem wrapped up in an Australian flag shouted “Thank you America!”
